John 16:33 These things I have spoken to you that in me you may have peace. In this world, you will have many tribulations but be of good cheer for I have overcome the world.

2 Cor 4:7 -11 But we have this wealth in vessels of earth, so that it may be seen that the power comes not from us but from God; We are troubled on every side yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed.

Jesus said that in this world we will have trials, be persecuted but we should be of good cheer for he has overcome the world. Paul further wrote on the same that we are troubled, hard-pressed on every side, cast down but not crushed, perplexed and struck down but not destroyed.

This brings us to the question Why trials? Why do we find ourselves going through distress? Someone may say I thought after salvation I will be exempted from such? Why does God allow such?

In a world that comprises of people with different philosophies, Jesus said that we should be of good cheer for He has overcome the World and that is born of God overcomes the world.

We overcome because Jesus overcame for this is which enables us to overcome even our faith. This is because God is at work. There is a weight of glory that is about to be birthed and manifested in you and me.

2 Cor 4:17  puts an emphasis that our affliction is but for a moment, it is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory.

Whatever the affliction, financial issue, marital strain, emotional issues, or disease you are in it’s just for a moment and a season and it’s about to be over.

Everything we go through as believers other than out of unrighteousness, carelessness, and disobedience is working for our own good. Where was God when Joseph was persecuted or hated by his brothers, put in a pit, conspired to be killed and later sold as a slave and finally put in prison, where was God? But fast forward we see Joseph as a Prime Minister in Egypt making a profound statement to his brothers that what was meant for evil but God worked it out for good.

Rom 8:28…And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God.

Why was Jesus afflicted?

Jesus did not live a careless or disobedient life the only time we see Jesus afflicted is on the cross when God had laid on him all our sins and it was the only time He called out God as My God My God why have you forsaken me because He knew God had laid the sins of the world on him. God allows storms, sufferings, and persecution so that He may do a greater work in us. Note that nothing can change the plan and purpose of God concerning our lives.

God is using the situation to train us, prepare us, and mature us in order to handle the much greater weight of glory.

Unfortunately, many of us while in the process of preparation we give up or quit but It is in such moments that we realize how insufficient and dependent on God and allow good work to be done in us.

2 Cor 12:5-9

And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure …three times I pleaded.

Why trials
  • Gods means of purifying our faith
  • Peter 1:6-7  for a little while if need be
  • That we are reminded of how insufficient and weak we are by ourselves
  • Trials compel us to look up to God and cry more for help
  • God reveals himself to us in times like this
  • That we become more like him

For every set back has a comeback. Sorrow may endure in the night but joy cometh in the morning.
